Maple class (Year 5) is taught by Miss Layman and Miss Marsh.
What will we be learning this term?
English – We will be looking at myths and legends through studying the story of Beowulf. We will all be working towards writing our own myths and legends. Poetry and Biography texts will follow this topic.
Maths – This term, in year 5, we will be covering various aspects of the maths curriculum including place value, negative numbers, calculation strategies involving all four operations, properties of number and some aspects of fractions. Mental maths and problem solving will be a key theme running through the term.
Science – In science we will start covering the topic of Living Things and their Habitats focusing on classification and micro-organisms.
History – In history we will be studying World War 2 with the main focus of our lessons being The Battle of Britain. The class have already started researching recipes from World War 2 for their homework and this will crossover into our DT lessons when we will vote on a recipe to create.
Geography – We will move on to geography after half term where we will be studying Eastern European capital cities and rivers.
Art – We will be looking at perspective drawing with a particular focus on using a vanishing point to develop depth in artwork.
Design and Technology – We will be creating one of the World War 2 recipes that the class have researched. This will include blackberries that thclass will be foraging for this term.
RE – During our RE lessons we will be looking at Christianity and Buddhism.
Computing – Our first topic in computing will be internet safety during which the class will be able to explore ways in which they can keep themselves safe when using the internet. Aspects of writing code may also be incorporated this term.
French – In French, our first topic, we will look at learning new phrases and building sentences relating to greetings and commonly used expressions.
PE – In PE we will be learning and playing Dodgeball and composing a World War 2 dance. Circuit training will be incorporated throughout this term as part of health and keeping fit.
PSHE – In PSHE our first topic is “Being Me in My World” where lessons will include self-identity, group identity, responsibilities, consequences and group work.
