Personal, Social & Health Education

Vision

Our PSHE curriculum aims to empower every child to grow into a confident, healthy and independent individual who can make informed choices and contribute positively to society. We want our pupils to understand themselves, value others, and develop the personal and social skills needed to thrive both in school and in the wider world. Through PSHE, children learn about their role within their community and develop the confidence, respect and compassion that underpin strong, positive relationships. We follow Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, which is a progressive and spiral scheme of learning. In planning the lessons, Jigsaw PSHE ensures that learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year as appropriate.

Intent

Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation.

Our intent is to provide a curriculum that supports pupils in recognising their own worth, working cooperatively with others and taking increasing responsibility for their learning and behaviour. We aim to help children develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, preparing them for the challenges of growing up.
We also aim to deepen pupils’ understanding of the political and social structures that influence their lives, alongside their rights, responsibilities and duties as members of society. Central to our curriculum is respect for diversity and a shared sense of common humanity, enabling children to form meaningful, fulfilling relationships.

Implementation

Pupils engage in a broad range of activities both within and beyond the classroom. These experiences encourage them to participate fully in school life and the wider community. Through discussion, reflection and practical learning opportunities, children are supported to explore real-life issues, express their views, and develop the skills needed to navigate an ever-changing world.
Our teaching reinforces core values, including honesty, respect, responsibility and cooperation. Learning is designed to be interactive, inclusive and responsive to pupils’ needs, ensuring that every child feels valued and supported.

Jigsaw 3-11 offers a comprehensive programme for Primary PSHE, including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

Impact

By the time pupils leave our school, they are equipped to make thoughtful, responsible choices and contribute positively to their communities. They develop the confidence to express themselves, the resilience to face challenges and the empathy to understand others.
Our PSHE curriculum helps children to:

Appreciate themselves as unique individuals capable of spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical growth.

Value others and understand that positive relationships are essential to personal fulfilment and community wellbeing.

Uphold key principles such as truth, justice, freedom, human rights and collective responsibility.

Respect and care for the natural and human-made environment, recognising it as a source of life, beauty and inspiration.

Overall, PSHE at our school ensures that pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and for their future roles as active, responsible citizens.

How Can You Support Your Child’s Learning?

The personal and social development of our children is achieved through partnership between school and the family. To support your children, you could:

Come to information events for parents about the school’s approach to PSHE related issues such as the curriculum, online safety or puberty.

Make sure your child knows who their trusted adults are at home (who they can talk to if they are worried).

Talk with your children about the issues explored in PSHE education and ask them about what they have learned at school.

If you have any questions about the PSHE curriculum or are worried about your child, please speak to their teacher, the PSHE leader (Miss Johnson) or a senior member of staff. The curriculum is constantly updated and parents will be invited to view resources on a regular basis. However if you would like to view PSHE resources used by the school, please approach the PSHE Leader or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
