Modern Foreign Languages
Vision
Our vision is for every child to develop a love of languages and have the confidence for early communication in French through meaningful, engaging, and culturally rich learning experiences. We believe that early language learning builds curiosity, broadens horizons, and lays the foundations for lifelong global citizenship. At Aycliffe Drive Primary, we strive to teach languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating for all learners and encourage pupils to develop an appreciation of cultural differences. Through a strong foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, we ensure that children can use and apply their language learning in a variety of contexts and continue to build on these skills as they transition to secondary school.
Intent
Impact
Children will leave our school with the confidence, curiosity, and cultural awareness to engage positively with another language. Pupils will have developed secure foundations in the four key language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—enabling them to communicate with increasing accuracy and independence. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will be well‑prepared and motivated for further language learning in secondary school, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to continue their progress.
Implementation
French is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge progressively across Key Stage 2. Lessons are delivered weekly, ensuring regular exposure and opportunities for revision and practice. Teaching places a strong emphasis on developing secure phonics, vocabulary, and grammatical understanding, enabling pupils to apply their learning with increasing confidence and accuracy.
A variety of interactive approaches—such as songs, stories, games, role‑play, and dialogue—are used to make learning engaging. Visual supports, repetition, and modelling are consistently used to reinforce understanding and support accurate pronunciation. Opportunities to revisit and retrieve prior learning are embedded throughout each unit to strengthen long‑term retention and fluency.
Cultural appreciation is woven throughout the curriculum, with pupils exploring vocabulary and phrases for traditions, festivals, and everyday life. This makes language learning purposeful and meaningful.
Assessment is ongoing and focuses on pupils’ ability to listen, speak, read, and write in French with increasing independence. Teachers use questioning, observation, and short tasks to check understanding and inform next steps in planning. Through high‑quality teaching, well‑sequenced planning, and rich cultural experiences, the curriculum ensures that pupils steadily build the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm they need to succeed in language learning.
