Design & Technology
At Aycliffe Drive Primary School, Design Technology (DT) is an exciting, hands-on subject that encourages children to think creatively, solve problems and bring their ideas to life. Through practical experiences, pupils design and make purposeful products that solve real and relevant problems in a range of contexts, while considering their own needs and the needs, wants and values of others.
DT empowers our pupils to become confident, independent problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. Throughout the design process, children are encouraged to take risks, explore ideas and learn from mistakes. In doing so, they develop our core learning skills of resilience, resourcefulness, reflectiveness and reciprocity. DT nurtures innovative thinking and helps pupils grow into enterprising, capable citizens who can adapt and thrive in an ever-changing world.
Design Technology has strong links with mathematics. Pupils apply their mathematical knowledge when measuring, weighing and calculating accurately, working with shape, space and scale, and understanding proportion, time and cost. These real-life applications help children see the purpose of mathematics and deepen their understanding through practical problem-solving.
By exploring past and present designs and technologies, pupils develop a critical understanding of how DT shapes everyday life and impacts the wider world around them.
Our Aims
Through our Design & Technology curriculum, all pupils will:
· Follow the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Design & Technology
· Work confidently with a wide range of materials and components, including textiles, food, construction kits (including electronics) and sheet materials
· Design and make high-quality, functional products
· Use a variety of tools, materials and processes to create purposeful outcomes
· Develop creative, practical and technical skills
· Apply mathematical skills such as measuring, estimating, weighing and calculating when designing and making products
· Form and express opinions about their own designs and the work of others
· Evaluate and improve their designs and finished products
· Communicate their ideas clearly, both orally and visually
· Develop a curiosity and enthusiasm for Design & Technology
· Be encouraged to think independently and creatively
· Learn and apply the appropriate language and vocabulary of Design & Technology to observe, record and explain their ideas
Through Design & Technology, we aim to inspire children to become imaginative designers, confident makers and thoughtful problem-solvers who understand how creativity and mathematics work hand in hand.
