Art and Design

At Aycliffe Drive Primary School, art, craft and design are celebrated as a vital part of our curriculum. We believe these subjects give children the freedom to express themselves, explore their creativity and take pride in their ideas. Through art and design, our pupils learn to experiment, take risks and enjoy the creative process, building confidence along the way. Art also provides a powerful way for children to express their thoughts, feelings and individual identities in a safe and supportive environment.

Art, craft and design play an important role in developing our core learning skills. Pupils are encouraged to be resilient when things don’t go to plan, resourceful when exploring materials and techniques, reflective about their work, and collaborative when sharing ideas and learning from others.

Curriculum Intent

In line with the National Curriculum, we believe that a high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that children develop progressive skills, building on prior knowledge and techniques as they move through the school. This enables pupils to gain confidence, refine their abilities and apply their learning in increasingly ambitious and creative ways.

As pupils progress, they develop the ability to think critically and gain a deeper understanding of art and design. They learn how art reflects and shapes history, and how it contributes to culture, creativity and the wider world around them.

Our Aims

Through our art and design curriculum, we ensure that all pupils:

· Produce creative work by exploring their own ideas and recording their experiences

· Develop skills and confidence in drawing, painting, sculpture and a wide range of other art, craft and design techniques

· Evaluate and discuss creative work using the appropriate language of art, craft and design

· Learn about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of different art forms

In addition, at Aycliffe Drive Primary School, pupils are encouraged to:

· Learn through hands-on, tactile and sensory experiences

· Use their imagination when designing and creating artwork

· Record observations and ideas in sketchbooks, which they keep and develop throughout their time in school

· Communicate thoughts, ideas and feelings visually, helping them to express themselves with confidence and creativity

· Make meaningful cross-curricular links with other subjects

· Take part in whole-school creative projects, such as Take One Picture

Through art and design, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of creativity and ensure every child has the opportunity to develop their skills, express themselves and shine.
